Port of Açu hosts meeting of the Association of Private Port Terminals for the first time

20+ officials of private ports came to discuss improvements in the segment

More than 20 members of the Association of Private Port Terminals (ATP) gathered for the first time in the Port of Açu, in northern Rio de Janeiro state, to discuss relevant matters for the segment. The meeting was attended by representatives of the most important private ports in Brazil, such as Itapoá, Pontal, Portocel and Portonave, as well as officials from ArcelorMittal, Braskem, Gerdau, Hidrovias do Brasil, Samarco, Ternium, Transpetro, Usiminas and Vale. The group represented by the association accounts for 60% of all cargo handled in Brazilian ports in 2017 and is now responsible for 47,000 direct and indirect jobs.

According to ATP Chairman Murillo Barbosa, Brazil’s port infrastructure is already at full speed, but intermodal challenges to distribute output are still a bottleneck and a key issue discussed by the segment: “Our numbers show that the port sector must be recognized as strategic for the recovery of the Brazilian economy. To that end, strong investment in accessibility is indispensable, so as to optimize the connection between the ports and companies that use their facilities,” he said.

While visiting the Açu Port Complex, ATP members were shown the Iron Ore Terminal, the Multicargo Terminal (T-MULT) and the area where Port of Açu customers set up their own facilities. The group also took a speed boat for a technical visit to Terminal 2 (T2 – Onshore) and was able to see in the Oil Terminal (T-OIL) the docking operation of the fourth Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC, one of the largest in the world) welcomed by Açu Petróleo.

Caio Cunha, manager of Institutional Relations for the Port of Açu, said that hosting the ATP meeting in the Port Complex was an important opportunity to present the Port of Açu to the country’s largest private terminals and encourage exchanges in good practices and strategic partnerships: “It is our great pleasure to welcome ATP to the Port of Açu. We had the opportunity to show our whole infrastructure, the work at the terminals and projects being developed. Synergy between us, association members, is vital for us to work with authorities to reduce logistics bottlenecks, defend our interests and reach solutions to promote sustainable development in Brazil’s port sector,” he added.
