Initiative benefits more efficient vessels with different rates
Port of Açu formalized in March its implementation of the Environmental Ship Index (ESI), a ranking that classifies vessels that exceed the emission standards issued by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Ships which perform above environmental standards, including the levels of greenhouse gases emissions, now have access to different port tariffs, with discounts up to 10%.
With this initiative, Port of Açu joins a list of 62 global ports that have adopted the incentive mechanism. ESI is a project led by the World Ports Sustainability Program (WPSP), linked to the International Ports Association (IAPH).
“The adoption of ESI by Açu reinforces our commitment to participate in the global effort to reduce emissions through an incentive for a key player in the maritime chain, the shipowners. It is a joint effort to promote the use of cleaner technologies”, says Tessa Major, Director of International Business at Port of Açu and Vice-President of IAPH in South and Central Americas.
Port of Açu has had more than 13 thousand calls since 2014. In the last year it had 3,245 vessel calls, especially from B-Port (Edison Chouest), which operates in Açu the largest and most modern offshore support base in the world.
The first vessel to call the base and receive the incentive was SEA Brasil, operating for Equinor.
Today there are already more than 8 thousand ships registered in the program, available at the link: https://www.environmentalshipindex.org/ports .
