The Port of Açu, one of Brazil’s main ports, is taking another significant step towards sustainability and innovation by signing an area reservation contract with HIF Global, a multinational e-fuels company that develops projects to combat climate change. Under the agreement, formalized at a ceremony held during ROG.e, Brazil’s leading energy fair, HIF has set aside an area within the complex’s pre-licensed hydrogen and derivatives hub to develop an e-methanol facility.

The production of e-methanol, a clean and innovative fuel, will be carried out using hydrogen generated from renewable energy sources, together with recycled CO2. This process not only contributes to the decarbonization of the energy matrix, but also positions Brazil as a leader in the production of sustainable fuels, with applications ranging from transport to energy generation.

“Our agreement with HIF Global is a milestone for the Port of Açu and the region in this new industry. We are committed to promoting sustainable development and contributing to a cleaner and more energy-efficient future,” said Mauro Andrade, Executive Director of Business Development at Prumo. The production of e-methanol can be exported through the Açu Liquids Terminal.

The HIF project marks an important step forward in the country’s energy transition and aims to strengthen Porto’s position as a national and global hub for green hydrogen. The initiative is part of the federal government’s strategy to encourage innovation and the use of renewable energy sources, in line with the goals of reducing carbon emissions and combating climate change.

HIF, for its part, brings its international expertise and advanced technology to develop the project. “This is our first venture in Brazil. We have been operating the world’s first e-fuels facility for more than a year, demonstrating that our fuels are a real solution for combating climate change. We are excited about this collaboration and believe that the Port of Açu will be a key pillar in building a sustainable future together,” said Cesar Norton, president and CEO of HIF Global.

The Port of Açu, located in the state of Rio de Janeiro, has obtained the preliminary environmental license for the development of a large-scale H2 and derivatives hub. The port complex stands out as an important logistics and industrial center and is now positioning itself as a player in the renewable energy sector. The project hopes to attract new investment and boost the local economy.
